Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best was released because he is unable to play after sustaining a severe concussion two seasons ago. He was scheduled to return last season but was unable to leave the NFL’s physically unable to perform list.
Most people wouldn’t be surprised if Best retires.
The fact is, Dave Birckett says he may never play again. He was drafted 30th overall in the 2010 draft. The Lions acquired the draft pick in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings.

It was Best’s third concussion. He had his first two in college while playing for the California Golden Bears in his last year. His first was against Arizona State and it was considered minor. Best came back a week later. It was that game, against Oregon State, where he suffered his second concussion. His college football career was over.
Maybe if he hadn’t played the week after his initial concussion he would still be playing. We will never know.
